Nissan LEAF Batteries Power South African Classrooms

Nissan is driving more than just vehicles – it’s driving change. Through an innovative second-life initiative, LEAF batteries are helping underprivileged schools gain reliable access to electricity, improving education and sustainability across communities.

From the Road to the Classroom

Unlike traditional batteries that end up in landfills, the Nissan LEAF battery continues its journey after life in a vehicle. By repurposing these batteries, Nissan supports rural communities in line with its 4R conceptReuse, Refabricate, Resell, and Recycle — ensuring environmental responsibility and long-term value.

Real Impact at Filadelfia School

Right here in South Africa, Filadelfia School has felt the direct benefits of this program. Home to 479 students, the school faced constant power outages that disrupted learning. Thanks to Nissan’s solar panels paired with retired LEAF batteries, students now enjoy a stable learning environment powered by renewable energy.

Beyond South Africa – A Continental Reach

The impact stretches beyond our borders. On the North African coast, repurposed LEAF batteries have powered 90,000 residents who were previously disconnected from the national grid. This initiative, in partnership with Enel, a leading global energy company, highlights the scalability and global potential of Nissan’s sustainable solutions.

Driving Change Together

Every Nissan driver plays a role in supporting these life-changing projects. By choosing Nissan, you contribute to a greener future and improved education for communities in need.
